The learning gap

The distance between what a learner can do independently ("actual development level") and what they can achieve with guidance from a More-Knowledgeable Other ("level of potential development"). Instruction is productive only inside this gap — above it the task exceeds the learner’s reach; below it nothing new is learned.

More-Knowledgeable Other (MKO)

Any person — teacher, peer, mentor — with greater competence in the relevant domain. The MKO need not be a formal authority; a marginally more advanced peer often fulfils the role just as well.

Scaffolding

Temporary, targeted support that enables the learner to work within the ZPD. Vygotsky never used the term "scaffolding." David Wood, Jerome S. Bruner, and Gail Ross introduced it in 1976 — after Vygotsky’s death — to name the practical support structures their tutoring experiments revealed.

Fading

Gradual withdrawal of scaffolding as competence grows. Fading is the sign that learning has occurred and the ZPD has shifted upward. Without fading, support breeds dependency rather than autonomy.

When to Use:

  • Designing instruction or onboarding content: pitch difficulty just above the learner’s current independent ability, not at or below it

  • LLM prompting: "Explain X at the level of someone who knows Y but not yet Z" — targeting the ZPD rather than explaining from scratch or over-explaining

  • Coaching and mentoring: identify what the mentee can almost do alone; scaffold from there and withdraw support as skill grows

  • Documentation review: check whether explanations assume too much (beyond the reader’s ZPD) or repeat what is already known (below it)

  • Calibrating AI-assisted tutoring: use demonstrated learner performance as the baseline and target the next challenge level

  • Bloom’s Taxonomy — classifies the cognitive level of a task; ZPD locates the challenge band where a specific learner can grow

  • 4MAT — structures a teaching arc from motivation to transfer; ZPD identifies where in that arc the learner currently stands

  • Feynman Technique — surfaces the learner’s actual understanding floor, which maps to the lower bound of their ZPD

Current Status:

  • "Scaffolding" is widely attributed to Vygotsky in secondary literature, but the term is absent from his writing. The distinction matters when prompting an LLM: invoking "ZPD" activates Vygotsky’s sociocultural framing; invoking "scaffolding" activates Wood/Bruner/Ross’s instructional mechanics. Both are valid anchors for related but distinct ideas.

  • Moll (1990) argued that interpretations focused on skill-transfer from expert to novice are "too narrow, theoretically misleading, and of limited instructional utility," calling instead for collective, activity-based zones rather than individual expert–novice dyads.
